AQUATOPIA

Aquatopia is a large-scale, underwater-themed carnival event staged on Liverpool’s waterfront. Originally created to mark the city’s role as host of the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, the parade brings together performance, costume and sound in a high-energy public spectacle.

The photography focused on the parade itself, its performers, choreography and visual language, rather than audience response. The intention was to capture the design and movement of the event as it travelled through the city.

Coverage centres on the performers and their interaction with space. The work documents the parade’s marine-inspired characters, from drumming octopuses to glittering puffer fish and skating jellyfish, alongside the scale and rhythm of the procession as a whole.

Rather than stepping back to observe from the crowd, the photography stays close to the action, focusing on colour, texture and motion. This approach emphasises the crafted nature of the event and the immersive quality of the experience, allowing the visual identity of the parade to take precedence.

Capturing spectacle through movement and design.
